An animal circus in Malta

I’ve just seen this unwittingly hilarious promotional (or is de-promotional) video of various Maltese celebrities speaking their mind about the animal circus which will visit/has already visited/is currently training Siberian tigers in Valletta.

Now before you go medieval on me, I’m not saying I agree with animal circuses. I’m no vegetarian, but I don’t agree with nor am sympathetic to inhumane treatment and downright torture on animals simply to get to them to perform ridiculous, painful and mostly anthropocentric tricks.

However, while I applaud the initiative, I fault the execution. Come on dude, that shit is funny. It’s shot in such an ironic post-Xarabank manner, those melancholy greys, those rapid edits between opinions, that endless repetition. And what’s best, the diction. I love it. With a few exceptions, most of the accents you just heard wouldn’t at all be out place in Mind Your Language.

I’ve actually been to the circus once, on a school outing (remember those days of innocence?) I didn’t see anything untoward there, and was struck by one thing only, the cannonball shape elephant faeces take. Well, I say struck, there was a net in the way. It’s fair to say I wasn’t overly impressed, and never returned.

However, to demonstrate that I am not an evil doing heathen who feeds only on swan hearts and elephant steak, I’m going to share how you really get a message to stick in people’s heads, and what’s more, make them sing it, out loud, in the office. That way, a viral campaign is started, because it’s a) funny, b) memorable, c) not in the weepy l-Istrina style.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Tim Minchin and his song, “Bears Don’t Dig on Dancing”. Best line at 2.30.

If dancing is not to your liking, try something like the image below. Heaven knows it’s as nature intended, but please, do not use Peppi for this one.

Major Update:

Judging by the comments both here and on Facebook, I am not alone in my opinion of this video. However, I am not as creative as you may think I am, in fact, I am creative mostly when it comes to criticising. However, my friend Cedric, who recently launched his new website cedricvella.com, stayed up all night to edit and correct the original video. New version below. Auto-tune is awesome! Share and enjoy.

  1. Those accents. Good grief.
Local media seems to believe in melodrama über alles, doesn’t it?

Peppi, love, it’s collar, not Collaaarrrr.

    .. Great stuff!

  5. Good one the last video xD
I guess there are multiple ways of explaining a point of view or different ones. Using humor is the best way. Precisely yesterday I wrote about one video about similar topic:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmdNjoGBOoc
    Funny too!

  6. The most annoying and offensive thing about this video is using these presumptuous arrogant big headed ‘celebrities’ to convey a message on a subject which in reality has nothing to do or is remotely related to their activities, career, profession or whatever you may call it….

Honestly who gives two fucks about what Ira Losco or John Bundy have to say about animals? or why does anyone suppose that I need to listen to their opinion or message about anything for the matter?

Dear whoever you are that came up with this pathetic idea for a video…give me someone who is actually TRULY INVOLVED in the fight for animal rights, REAL people not these insolent assholes who seem to be speaking from a 10 metre high pedestal, looking down on everybody with this patronizing attitude as if we cannot make up our own opinions about such subjects.

These videos make me nothing but angry…angry at these superficial ‘celebrities’ who jump onto any opportunity even causes such as this one and make of it a vehicle for self-publicity.

Seriously get off your high fucking horses before you get knocked the fuck off

  7. …my point goes hand in hand with Mark’s opinion

There are many ways to convey this important message …. not this one

  8. Good grief. I couldn’t watch it until the end. I had to kill two cute kittens to get over it.

    PS: Touché

  9. While I agree wholeheartedly with what you’re saying, whether we like it or not, even if they don’t apply to us, these people do have pull with the masses. Celebrities voicing a cause does work. While some of them do it to gain coverage (selflessness goes out the window), others don’t. Even if they do do it for themselves, who cares really? As long as it works. Whether we like it or not… it does. Look at what international celebrities did for Haiti!

Yeah the execution is predictable… Xarabanksy (apologies to Banksy) stuff. Basically they should have stuck to a Maltese version only, or used two, maybe three of these people only for the English version.

And Peppi…. oh dear Peppi… who dragged you out of bed to film this? Hairbrush? Hair cut? Hair anything!

  11. Regardless of what one may think about animal circuses (which I enjoyed greatly as a child, and now I don’t give two shits about), some of those accents make my skin crawl.

  12. ahahahahahah sob

  13. And we, as graphic design students, are always trying to come up with new ideas and that every campaign must follow persuasion/sarcasm/shock and other tactics to convey the message/concept… heh

  14. Here’s my 2-cents worth.
Incidentally, one of Moira’s best friends had another go at me on facebook, and then, so did Alison. Brilliant.

“Do you know why there are so many protests against fur but none against leather? It’s easier to hit old ladies than it is to hit a bunch of Hell’s Angels.”

That cracked me up :D Well done that woman :)
